Prelude:Introduction:After joining the Clipper Round the World 2015-16 in Leg 3 from Cape Town, South Africa to Albany, Australia, Clipper Round the World 2015-16, the writer penned awrote series of column articles for thea Chinese magazine,Global Children Sailingto introduce storiesabout Clipper sailors. With the awarding success of the Qingdao boat winning the of Clipper 2019-20 Race Winner by Qingdao team in 2022, all the Chinese Clipper crew are proud that more people are getting increasingly curiousexcited that more people are interested in about the sport and the peoplecrew. Thus, Season TwoThis is season two ofStories of OrdinaryPeople Sailing Around the World,is launching with in both Chinese and English.
to help more people understand the stories behind. Why is the ocean is so attractive? What makes ocean sailors different? Could you be one of them, challenging the ocean and yourself? What is the difference between you and them? Will you be one of them to challenge yourself and embrace the ocean as well? This series tellsyou more about sailing and the love of the ocean. You are welcome to get to know them, to know sailing and to love the ocean.
The storyprotagonist of this issue is about a marine engineer who signed up for the race in Australia at his own expense. He is Mengmeng Xu, who completed half of the world voyagethe circumnavigation in the first to fourth Legs of the 2015-16 Clipper Race, from England to Australia. This is his story, ten years after.is now working in Norway.Aret you curious about his current life, almost ten years after. having his last race almost ten years ago?
Mengmeng was originally from Shengyang and did his bachelor's programme degreein offshore engineering at Dalian University of Technology. In his Year 3 & 4last two years of the university, he went tocityAustralia for ona joint degree programme between the university and Australia.Graduating in 2010 hHe stayed there tofor work in the industry of ocean oil construction after he was graduated in 2010the offshore oil industry. The sunshine, beaches and very popular water sports clubsenabled Mengmeng to begain his love with water sportsfor the sea.He bought himself a canoekayak, taking it on his car to use it wherever he could.
for himself and always take it on the car for training.
In 2011, Mengmeng’his immediate boss learned through casual chat that he often kayakedcanoed.Being a casual sailor and often short of teammates, his boss immediatelyand invited him to gofor sailing over one weekend in a 50 year-old boat.Mengmeng found it quite interesting to sail in a boat that is half a century old. From then on, he always joined his boss in thefor sailing weekendsfor sailing and they also took partjoined in some weekly regattas run by the local clubs. Soon he identified realisedthat it was not more expensive to go sailing than to go kayaking and there was a very good sailing culture withand all sorts of club activities in Australia to help peopleeveryoneto to eitherstart upsailing or to improve in sailing.
Where was he working at this time – you need to add the city
No matter whether you want to do it for leisure or for performance, it is very convenient there.
On In the blink of an eye, on Christmas Eeve 2013.Mengmeng learned from an Australiancolleague, who grew up in Italy, told Mengmeng that he was going to participate take partin a race called the ‘Clipper Round the World Yacht Race’, sailing from Western Australia to the Far East.As the only It is the only cross-ocean sailing race for those without such experience Mengmengthat ordinary people would participate. He was immediately interested and lookedup the Clipper website. and was deeply touched but the Clipper’s website.

After carefully consideringreviewing his own financesial status, Mengmeng decided to sign up, paying monthly towards sailing halfway around the globe. His application involved an online interview and after two anxious weeks he heard he had been accepted. and pay by mortgage for half of the eight legs of the whole journey, which would sail fromHe chose to start his voyage in London (UK)sailingto Rio de Janeiro, (Brazil), toCape Town, (South Africa), to Albany in (Western Australia) and then tofinishing at Arlie Beach, in (Northeastern Australia).A distance of XXXKm and a journey that would take (how long?).In the following year, a large part of his monthly salary went to pay the fees for the race and training and he laterresigned from his job to take part.
He seriously made his application, had his online interview with Clipper, and then waited with an anxious heart. If he could pass the interview, he would enjoy this unusual journey, which might probably be the only sailing boat trip from London to Australia. If he could not pass, it could still be fine as at least he tried for this dream. After two weeks of worrying about the result, he got the email notice from Clipper that he was in and needed to join and pass the four levels of training before he could join in the race.
In the following year, Mengmeng used a large part of his monthly salary to pay the mortgage for the Clipper race and training. Then, he resigned from the company before the race to totally enjoy it.

Face Death Soon After the Race顺利完成四轮培训之后,濛濛在2015年8月31日从英国伦敦开启了自己的帆船海上旅程。
After successfully completing the four levels of training, Mengmeng started his ocean crossing cross-ocean sailing journey from London, UK, on the 31st ofat the end of August 2015.Unexpectedly, Jjust a few days after setting offinto the race, a British crew member on board the IchorCoalsailor, Andrew Ashman, on the InchCoalwas killed when struck by the boom on the back of the head.was seriously injured while reefing on the night of September 5th, when the fleet was sailing near the Bay of Biscay, Portugal. He died during the night. The news shocked the crews entire race of all 12 boat teams including Mengmeng.who felt a bone-chilling wind blowing on the back of his head.
This wais the first-ever fatality in the nine-year Clipper race history since 1996of the Clipper race and while ocean racing is risky, that someone had died doing what you are doing, was difficult to accept..
Even though no one could guarantee 100% safety for any sports and race, it was so difficult to accept someone among your team who was truly dead in the same race you were doing.
The atmosphere on all the boats waswere inevitably gloomy. While everyone was waitingwaited for the accident report from by the race organizersation committee, crews were made all the more awareeveryone was recalling all the safety procedures one by one in mind. One of them is that you must keep your head down when near the boom. whenever you go down the boom no matter when and under what type of situation. The skipper kept encouraging the team, and all the crew were trying to work and discuss, analyse and comfort each other through their sadness..However, everyone still could not help feeling sad.
”Around the third day after the accident, Andy in the same watch The same watch as Menmeng? Who is this Andy? We need his surname to avoid confusion with thedead Andy. Or we don’t need his name at all and we just say how the crew were trying to cheer themselves up…
asked them while working, ‘Let’s think something happy.’‘What would you do if we are now backing arrivinginto port?’
Sophie, the British circumnavigator said she wanted to drink, describing the drinks and how much she would drink.; Andy said he would make a sand castle withand his girlfriend and how he would fashion shapes from the sand..Mengmeng kept silent on the sidestayed silent, ,hearing their discussion about what type of drink she would like to have and how many bottles; how he could work out the hair and the nose by sand… Such tiny and common bits of ordinary daily life became so beautifuljoyous and warm in this particularthe moment. , which made them Sslowly they get rid of their worries gave up worrying and gradually regained their strength and expectations about futurehopes for the future. They reminded each other that everyoneto look after him/herselfthemselves well and finish the race safely.
After a formal strict investigation, the race organizers released the accident report and invited all the team and Clipper families to make a book of condolences for Andrew and to comfort his family. After some stop and resting onshore, together with some psychological support, the IchorCoal team headed back to the race and quickly caught up with the main fleet quickly. After Leg 1, the team made a black label?? on the boat, carrying him itto finish the rest of the legs Andy Ashmanhe was meant to join afterwards together with the teamdue to complete.
Maybe because of such a challenge once the race began, or maybe engineers are always not talkative, Mengmeng did not talk much on the boat.He likeds to do his job carefully and support everyone wellothers, silently experiencinge and enjoying everything in aboutthe ocean and on the boat.
图片7: 掌舵的Matt和濛濛,Photo 7: Matt & Mengmeng at theonhHelm.
In all those four legs he had joinedAcross the four legs he sailed in, it was Leg 3, from Cape Town, South Africa, to Albany, West Australia, that for Mengmengwas the most impressive.one for Mengmeng. There was a storm soon after the race started, several crew were sick and unable to work because of seasicknesshad to lay down as for the seasickness. The Roaring Forties and the so-called ‘barrel washing machine leg’ was challenging everyone. The boat kept titlingwas rocking almost all the time.Mengmeng remembered that the spirit level level instrument on his mobile indicated thatshowed the boat was listing between 30 and -40 degrees for the majority of the time during this leg, reachingand 38 degreesfor the most.
A listing boat makes life difficult for everyone on board. This titling boat means that life gets every difficult for anyone on the boat. The hanging cooking utensils in the galley align with the angle of the boat, so you had to remember to lock then in place so they did not fall.were able to move its angle aligned with the boat, you just need to remember lock them with the clincher. As for the “mMother” on duty to cook and boil water, he or she just needs to be able to cut and cookwork in the tilting boat, still servingand serve food and drinks for the crew on time, which could be regarded as with a little difficulty.
Photo 9: Mengmeng working on the deck更难的是如厕。
MWhat is more difficult is to go to the toilet. The toilet set candoes not tilt with the boat as what the cooker would dothe galley stove does, so you must .It was set there, so one had toadjust his/her ownyour body positionto suit the toilet set in the small tilting toilet space and make sure both oneselfkeep yourself and the toilet was clean. ,This is not easy and some knowledge of yoga positions and being flexible is helpful!
which is not as easy as you could think to try some yoga movement. It was really difficult, and that type of difficulty one could not easily describe.
Under such titling conditions, walking and working on the deck, changing sails, reefing, trimming and all the work to keep the boat going needs to be done in the face of turbulent sea conditions. At the same time crew safety is paramount. stogether with the team during the waves and winds was not easy at all, especially you need to make sure your own safety and that of the team.OnIn the land, it takes just moments to you only need several seconds to walk 5 meters ahead to get a cup of hot tea; however, oin the boat, what you need is several minutes, doubles, triples and even several times of the time you need in landor more:,and you should also rememberyou need to walk slowly on the high side of the boat with your safety belt clinched onattached with your safety harness..
At such moments, what made Mengmeng most happy would be the hearing of the answer from other crew that ‘I do not need any drink.’ when he was the Mother and asked crew working on deck which drink they would prefer, coffee or what type of tea. Such answer would make him cheers in the heart as it means to save how many minutes of difficult moving to serve the tea to the crew on deck and then get back to the galley.
When working in galley, Mengmeng recalls how it would please him to hear that crew did not want hot drinks as this would save him many minutes navigating the route to and from the deck.
Photo 11: Can I have a cup of tea?
The wind, the waves, the tilting were not always theonly difficulties and challenges, though they have their unique beauty.
When there wereWith no big waves, there iswas only your boat in the intensive ocean and all what you could onlycan see is the was the endless oceanocean to the horizon. When theBut with huge waves emerged the boat, it was likethe boat appearsto be in a valley and the boat was moving through alongthe valley’sfloorbed through the heavy fog, one could seewith nothing but waves 200 or 300 meters ahead of the deckbow. If it was in theAt night, you can seecould only see the deck illumined by the weak light on top of the mastmasthead, weak light, thoughbut bright enough to give you you all the directions and comforts in the world.
When the boat was gettingAs the boat powers through one big wave, it was like tois as though you get out of the valley and suddenly haved an open view, you could seeing the immerse vast ocean in front of youahead, only ocean at all.Maybe there would comeis another big wave, getting through that wave, getting out of the valley. One after oneanother, you move ahead in the valleys and oceans, with morning clouds, dawns, twilights, sunrise and sunset, evening stars scatteredallacrossover the sky in the eveningsas a “starry dome”., shining like a beautiful dome was covering you.You could onlycan feel the changes and charms of mother nature.Only on the ocean can you have big thoughts when you understand that, while people arewas so small.
and could only have big thoughts like the ocean. All these, you could never experience when you are on land.
Back to Life After the Race转眼四个赛段比赛结束,濛濛在艾尔利海滩和队友们告别,重返陆地,准备着重新开始陆地上精彩纷呈的生活,却没想到海上这半年间,自己所在的海洋石油行业已经发生了翻天覆地的变化,整个行业进入低谷期,不但自己为了参赛辞职如今很难找到新工作,当初把自己引入帆船之门的领导也被裁员赋闲在家。
After finishing four legs of the race of four legs, Mengmeng said Goodbye to the team at Arlie Beach and headed back to his normal life on land. However, during these half year when he was in the oceanat sea, the off-shoreocean oil industry which he was belonged had already hadundergone a dramatical change. The whole industry was was into the low periodin recession, not only him was it very difficult for him to get aa new job as he had quit his former job before joining in the race, but evenalso his former boss, who had takentook him into the world of sailing, had been made was redundant and now stayed at home jobless.
Photo 13: Daily work of Where a marine engineer works.
Mengmeng sent out at least 70 resumes to different companies in his industry, but was not able to get his luck in this downtime of the industrystill had no job.He gave himself a holiday to travel around Australia and then back to China, to Sichuan, Chongqing, Taiwan and then Shengyang to be together with his parents. That half year without working, was very similar to those dark, dark nights in the ocean and those moments when boat Qingdao boat was getting through the deep valley covered fully by waves and you could not see what was ahead200 meters aheadway.
Please confirm that Mengmeng was on Qingdao and the death was on InchCoal– not Mengmengs boat. I was confused reading the earlier section.
Photo 14: Sailing in Leg 3&4the Southern Ocean.
Those nights were difficult but still welcomed eventually by the dawn and light eventually; while no matter how big the waves were, they would eventually be over, toonce and once again to make the heart of every sailor to bestronger and stronger. ‘Now you are on land, nothing could be more difficult than what you have had in the ocean.’ Mengmeng’s fatherdad told him this way and let him calm down and wait patiently.
Then, withOn a friend’s recommendation, he went to work in Shenzhen for over a one year and then moved to Norway for work, a world-leading country in the technology of the off-shore oil industry. which is a country with one of the most significant numbers of advanced technologies in the ocean oil industry.
The snow and cold in the nordic areain Norway encouraged him to take up skiing made him choose to ski first as his sports., but an accident damaged his left knee. Unfortunately, he had one accident very soon and had the cruciate ligaments of his left knee broken. After some treatment, he could get back to basic walking was able to walk again but, then he had aneeded surgery to rebuild his ligaments, and then he had one yearfollowed by a year of physiotherapy. With treatment he made a good recovery Thanks to the advanced rehabilitation treatment system of Nordic countries, he was recovered very well. There was no influence to his daily life and normal sports, but has only 730% of the power in his left knee compared to the right, of strength difference between two knees in terms of sports performance.limiting his ability to take part in sport.
Living in the highat altitude area of South of the Arctic Circle,Mengmeng was no longer able to ski but the common polar day and polar night made people in Norway love doing all sorts of sports to deal with such unique challenges of Mother nature.Mengmeng had to give up skiing and finally met athe group of people who lovedand always goingsailing and was .He became the youngest sailor in this group.
Sailing in Norway is not as convenient or as warm as that in Australia. The sailing season is only from April to October and normally people meet and have their trainning together after they finish work in the late afternoonfor a weekly regatta. .There is normally a weekly regatta for communication and skill improvement among all teams.NormallyIn the long summer nightsfromafter June, they would start from around 6pm and finish the regattasailing around 10pm.Afterthey sortinged out all the gears, cleaninged up all the boats and havingd a cup of drink to chew overreview the raceegatta today, it was still brightwould still be as light as daytime when they went homefinished up everything.
Sailing is not a sport only relying on thnot onlye about physical strength:, the strategy of the skipper, the understanding and use of the wind, the routeplanning about route for regatta and the cooperation between team members are more important than the muscle power of each singlethe strength of any one sailor. The knee injury ofMengmeng’s knee injury was not a problem at all here, while histheprevious experience of crossing the Atlantic Ocean, Southern Ocean and Indian Oceans, sailing half way around the world the world and the team work with people from different countries was a plus for him now and even to be enlarged and manifested in sailing, which made him cherish this sportmeant he could still contribute and enjoy sailing fully enjoy with friends after the injury.
Thisose group of people with the samewho share their love for sailing enabled Mengmeng to have additional way to relax and develop closer relationship with others in the Nordic region, a regionarea where people normally keep a bit of distance fromwith each other.
The working habits of In his work as a marine engineer made Mengmeng would naturally review and compare the safety and risks at work andhere between skiing and sailing -, the two sports he had experienced, and even extended to his work in the ocean. He saysid safety should always be the first priority, no matter it iswhether for sports or for work. His own skiinginjury by skiing was actually avoidable as it was raining the night before his accidentlastnight and in the morning and there was ice and mud oin the ski slopeing field. He found it was not the powdery snow condition as when he arrived and he should have call a stop stopped immediately, but he wanted to try his luck, ‘I amhave already here come, try it and itI would not be unlucky to hurt myself.’ He said he could estimate the risk carefully and call woulda stop by himself if there were another opportunitystop himself in a similar circumstance again.
This is like his work now in Norway.Norway is a country with not only having itsa leading position in ocean offshoreoil technology, but also the rule maker for the operation and safety systems in the his industry. All the staff, no matter high or lowirrespective of their position, everyone must join take partin a comprehensive ocean safety training every four years, to be familiar with all procedures and standardsmake sure that everyone has instinctive muscle memory for every single safety procedure in every single working position, correct and direct to follow the standards. This is one of the best parts of the job Mengmeng enjoys most.
he enjoys working in Norway. This is very similar to sailing: there are days that you should not good to go out oin the ocean, there are some parts of the routes marked unsuitable for sailing thatand you should avoidfollow. One must put safety as the first priority and one must learn to make use of the wind, wave, tide and, currents and get along with them nicely. It is not toYou don’t ignoreovertake mMother nature, but to follow and respect her to gain the strength from her for the support to arrive safely at your destination and with a lot of fun in the journeyenjoy the journey.
Photo 19, Qingdao team arriving in Albany, Australia in Leg 3from XXXXX, Mengmeng in frontrtow, the second from the rightleft.
When you are sailing you work with a team, the crew: , there is always a team of crew to work with closely, someone working belowunderthe deck for in the galley preparing food and drinks, someone on deck to helm and others to trim the sails whileandsomeone to take rest in turn to change watchesthose in the other watchare resting. with other crew, Iisn’t it exactly like our own journey of in life?No matter where you are, no matter in what type of condition you are with work, life or rest, in life isn’t it just like the sailing in the dark nights deep in Mengmeng’s memory? The helplessness, worrying and uncertainty when sailing across through the deep valley covered by huge waves in the Southern Ocean were all overtaking by brightness, happiness and openness.???iIsn’t it just like the small talks and smiles to brighten up the hope of each other? Such journey on the way and in the heart, isn’t it the origin of one’s power?I really don’t know how to say this!
Life is like the ocean and we all move on.It is hard to say that the choice made 10 years ago in Australia to spend six months step on the cross-ocean sailing journey with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race for half year in the ocean directly bringsbrought anything to Mengmenghim, but everything afterwards has somewhat links with it.This is perhaps the real lesson of taking the journey with Clipper – testing yourself against nature and learning who you really are. “May the force be with you.”
Probably, this is sailing and this is the life of sailing, unconsciously and deeply into one’s heart. If it were you, would you like to take on this journey to look for yourself and the strength inside your heart?Let the blessing be with you together with the waves.
