  • Comic Artist Sailor Bing LI
  • Part Six, Season Two, Stories of Ordinary People Sailing Around the World

  • The sailor of this session is good at drawing cartoon pictures.   The comic sailors drawn by him are very vivid and powerful, yet in very few lines.   People like me who have not joined in the race of this season can easily tell which one he is drawing.

  • This magic comic artist sailor is named as Bing LI, and nicknamed as Dabao.

  • These well-welcomed comic pictures were drawn in his spare time when he got back to work and life after the Clipper training, containing all his memories about the boat life and photos taken then.   He shared them in the WeChat Group of Clipper training sailors which everyone loved and gave high praises to.    They also helped spread his work around, which got him the nickname: comic artist sailor.

  • Starting of the Journey

  • Interestingly, Bing is neither a sailor nor a painter, but a volleyball player since young.   He was a member of the school volleyball team at young age, then joined in the athlete training school for professional training.   After graduation from Beijing Sport University, he joined Qingdao Municipal Sports Bureau to promote sports with younger people.

  • Even though he is a native Qingdao-er, his focus has always been about sports activities on land, regardless of the immense popularity and fame surrounding the Qingdao Sailing Centre with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2005 and 2008’s Beijing Olympics.

  • Are you ready to jump if opportunity knocks?

  • In Bing’s case, it came not just once in 2013 when he was tasked with helping out with reception for the Clipper Race13-14, but thrice in 2015 and again 2017. For 15-16, he looked after the welcome and departure ceremonies in Qingdao for each race team and their local activities. For 17-18, he was in the race team.

  • With the race oragnisation work year after year, he felt the bottle-neck at work as he did not understand sailing. He began to think how he could make it up.

  • Bing felt it was a sign to take up sailing so when he was again tasked to be in the organization team to recruit the Qingdao team for the Clipper Race 2019-20, he seized it.   He persuaded the leaders that he could be a better organizer if he could understand the bigger picture of the race.

  • The leaders and the administration center of sailing sport supported him.   He studied carefully about the selection criteria and began to learn English with great effort.   He spent almost all his spare time in English for that three months.   The hard work was paid off, he passed several rounds of selection and won the opportunity to join in the training for Clipper sailors and race.

  • English, English, the First Barrier for International Ocean Race Sailors

  • Bing now took a deep breath, arranged the work and began his Level 1-4 Clipper trainings in UK together with other Qingdao team crew.

  • He felt his English could not cope with the boat life even after that three-month hard work.

  • When the Level 1 training began, other crew members were nice to him and helped him by translating from time to time.   However, a miscommunication about the new working time occurred and as a result, he arrived late.   This made the skipper very unhappy.   Bing was apprehensive to explain his predicament and just continued working silently.   It seemed that this made the skipper even more unhappy about the perceived lack of communication.

  • Bing recalled the time of their first meeting onboard when the skipper asked everyone to make a self introduction.   Bing honestly said he was from Qingdao and that he worked for the race organization team.   The skipper caught his words immediately, ‘Don’t take it for granted that you would pass the training as you are working for the organization team!’

  • Bing felt puzzled, ‘Didn’t you ask us to introduce ourselves? Is there anything wrong to tell the truth?   Wouldn’t I work hard to pass the training as I work for the organization team?’

  • With the lateness this time and the introduction issue at the first meeting, Bing felt that the skipper might thought something about him unhappy.

  • English is one of the big barriers for international sailors.   When Bing couldn’t understand, he would naturally asked people around him to make sure he got it.   But the skipper told him, ‘When I am talking, don’t gossip.   You can ask question after I finish.’

  • The training manual provided by Clipper Training was only in English.   He couldn’t understand well and used his phone to look up the English dictionary when he was not working.   The skipper said again, ‘Don’t always play with mobile when you are off work!’

  • Since that first meeting, nothing has ever got right for Bing and so he felt very down.

  • For this level 1 training, it was his first time to be on boat and he suffered with seasickness, throwing over, and all sorts of discomforts.   It was really a tough experience for him both physically and psychologically.

  • However, his training as a young athlete kicked in in the afce of such difficulties.   He could maintain his strong motivation amidst such problems as he believed he would pass this level 1 training.

  • Every night before bed on boat, even after the sailing training of daytime, Bing would still head out to another boat to get Frankie, another Qingdao crew member, to ask him for a revision on the training earlier.    He tried all he could to understand what was taught everyday.

  • When the Level 1 training was over and the test went on, the skipper found Bing passed it with big surprise.

  • He said, ‘I didn’t think you could pass it.   I thought it wouldn’t be easy for you, but you did it.   Good!’

  • Bing was really so happy.   The feeling to break through zero to one was so great that he joined in the following Level 2 training with full confidence.

  • This time, the skipper was great, encouraging everyone about everything and no longer so critical.

  • Bing was very confident after passing the Level 1 crazy training.   He got very active on boat and had no fear about English.

  • Bing was very confident after passing the Level 1 crazy training.   He got very active on boat and had no fear about English.   When the training finished, the skipper told him, ‘How could I comment about you?   You got good skills, active and did not bad, but you just did not do the same as what I told you.   It would be better if your English is better.’

  • Then the Level 3 training.   The skipper was Bob, a former British Navy instructor and the Qingdao Skipper for Clipper 2015-16 in the middle of the race.   He got rich experience but with some accent.   It was not easy for Bing to understand his instructions especially when it was on the deck, with strong wind blowing and big waves crushing.

  • He remembered the experience at Level 1 about English, and his memory muscle as a young volleyball athlete kicked in.   He observed closely Bob’s gestures and his interactions with the surrounding enabled Bing to understand what was going on despite the language handicap.

  • It was such non-verbal communication that made effective.   Bob gave Bing high comments after the training, ‘Even though there was language barrier, there was no communication gap with him.   He could work efficiently.’

  • After this Level 3 training, Bing found his understanding for the work and life onboard was improving greatly.   He did not have any fear about English and began to enjoy the life on boat much better than before.

  • Trouble on the Sea

The White Cliffs
  • At the Level 4 training, they followed the tradition to have the mock race to the White Cliffs by   crossing the British Channel with all Clipper teams.

  • Qingdao team won the first and waited for the other teams to arrive the destination and then got back together as a whole fleet.

  • When they were about to eat after finishing, there came a big storm.   They had to move and turn during the heavy wind and waves.   All the crew members were on deck and worked together hardly.   The big waves pushed the deck harshly, the thunders faraway looked cruel and cold, everyone was hungry and cold, but had nowhere to hide. It was just the feeling to get so close to the death.

  • It took such a while to move from the west of the storm to its center for a little rest.   When they looked at the thunders and lightnings around them, they could only feel the fear and respect to the mother nature.

  • Probably it was the extreme difficulty that stretch out the potentials of everyone and the strength of the team, they managed to turn to the east of the storm and got back together with the fleet.

  • Getting over the storm and the hungry, it was only the feeling of luckiness left.   When they had a hot shower after getting back to the port and warmed up again, everyone felt so lucky to stay alive.

  • Difference between Sailing and Land Sports

  • After the training for 4 levels and went back to Qingdao, the comic artist sailor was painting the cartoon pictures for other crew members and could not help making the comparison between sailing and land sports he was very familiar before.

  • One can stop at any time while doing land sports.   When one is feeling unwell, or something unusual happens, both the sports and the athletes can stop at any time.

  • Water sports like sailing is different, especially for the ocean races.   You could not stop easily after departure unless you reach the end.   No matter whatever happens during the race, you have to work it out together with the team.   Even if you decide to quit the race, you have to hang on for another several days to get back to the land, while it might be not as easy as to hang on to the end.

  • Long distance sailing races matches are a good way to judge someone’s personality.   A whole team got along together for quite a couple of days.   When you share the food, look after the sick ones, get through the big wind and waves, go together for the difficult times between life and death, everyone becomes comrades-in-arms not just teammates.

  • Normally if you joined a long distance sailing together and the friends you made are friends for life.

  • Sailing is probably the sport with no age limit.

  • Many land sports are not suitable for people over certain age, while sailing is good for kids to start from OP at 5 or 6 and also good for those over 60 or 70.   The old can still have a lot of fun with sailing bigger boats.   It   even has no problem for a whole family to enjoy together.

  • The new popular China Family Sailing Regatta is one good example and it was even more common for foreigners at various ages to enjoy sailing.

  • Sailing is probably one sport to make you love studying.

  • There was an interesting investigation to look at the sports habits and their impact about the life and study for young people and found that athlete who are good at sailing are normally good at study.

  • Sailing big boats need team spirit and cooperation with everyone, while sailing small boats need quick response and decision with changes by yourself.   All these need quite a rich foundation of various knowledge, which might stimulate sailors to keep learning.

  • Lily Xu, the first Olympic sailing champion in China, is a good example.   She kept learning English while she was training for sailing, and kept study for her bachelor’s degree at Shanghai Jiaotong University.   Then she went to UK for her master’s degree.   She kept learning all the time and did quite well.   Now she is a sports journalist and does her sports interviews with a fluent and beautiful British accent.   She is excellent in and out of her sailing field.

  • Frankie, the circumnavigator of Clipper 19-20 Qingdao team is another example.   He keeps learning from English to sailing, literature, photography, video shooting and making, all to a deep and wide level.

  • Pity

  • Bing went back to Qingdao after the training and continued his work, while waiting for his race of Leg 5.

  • However, he missed it when the pandemic struck.   He could not join other races due to work and other commitments when the race resumed back in 2022.

  • Probably, when you lost one thing, you will get another one new.   When such pity was expressed through his pens, he painted such powerful comics with deep memory for the life on boat and crew members there.   Those comics moved a lot of people.

  • The writer even suggested that he could draw comics for skippers and give them as the race souvenir when they arrive in Qingdao.   They must keep it with great pleasure and proud.   Sailors could only be understood by other sailors and painted out such spirit by sailors.

  • Would you like to enjoy such comics one day?   Would you also like to become a sailor as well to understand such comics?
