Introduction: After joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2015-16 the writer penned a series of articles for the Chinese magazine, Global Children Sailing about Clipper sailors. With the success of the Qingdao boat winning the Clipper 2019-20 Race in 2022, all the Chinese Clipper crew are excited that there is increasing interest in the sport and the people. This is season two of Stories of Ordinary People Sailing Around the World, in both Chinese and English.
Why is the ocean so attractive? What makes ocean sailors different? Could you be one of them, challenging the ocean and yourself? This series tells you more about sailing and the love of the ocean.
The heroine of this story is Xiaotong HUANG, Sia, a 23 years-old, first year postgraduate student of atmospheric science in the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. As the Ambassador Crew of the Zhuhai boat, in the 2023-24 Clipper Race, she has recently finished Leg 3 of the race from Cape Town, South Africa to Fremantle, Australia, in December 2023. An experienced small boat sailor from the age of 11, she was captain of the Sun Yat-sen University Sailing Team during her undergraduate years. So why did she want to take part in the very different sport of ocean racing?
The Joy at Beach since Childhood
Born in Beijing in 2000 Sia spent every summer holiday with her parents at the seaside of Qinhuangdao. She was always very happy on the beach, even when she was crawling and hurt her knees on the grainy sand and shells, but she never cried. In the summer of 2011, her dad noticed the setting up of the Beijing Sailing Center (BSC) run by a British guy and he enrolled Sia.
The sailing instructors were from China and overseas and the students all had to wear helmets and lifejackets when sailing the dinghies (small boats) on the sea. ‘It was so cool,’ Sia says ‘when you learned to do it well. You could surf the waves, that feeling was more than just cool.’ She loved this new sports and her parents were happy to send her to the sailing camp every summer. Each year she learned more and enjoyed it more.
Aged 18 and allowed to work, she passed the test to be the coaching assistant at the sailing camp. Now she no longer needed her parents to pay for her sailing and felt a sense of achievement: ‘This sport could actually save money if I do it well.’
In 2019, Sia passed the national university entrance exam and was admitted to Sun Yat-sen University for the bachelor program in atmospheric science. She had told her first Chinese sailing coach where she was going to study when she went to work as an assistant at the sailing camp. Her coach immediately suggested that she should check whether there was a university sailing team as it would be good to join and continue sailing.
Sia was surprised as she thought she would have to stop sailing when she went to university till she checked that Sun Yat-sen University did indeed have a sailing team and that it was quite active in Chinese university competitions. Membership was also open to non-athletic students and she applied to join in as soon as she arrived.
The university sailing team competed in the sailing races like Clubs Cup and City Clubs Open Regatta (CCOR). The senior members of the team shared their training and racing experience with the new comers. Much encouraged, Sia began to look for a lot of videos, books and training materials about racing, both from China and abroad, sharing this with the team mates.
In her undergraduate study, she joined in twice of Jiuzhou Cup Sailing Regatta and was picked to take the helm in the second race, helping the team to fourth place in both races. In her third year she was made Team Captain and was popular for her teaching.
Unexpected Chance in Year Four of University
While waiting to graduate in May 2023, and start postgraduate study, Sia heard about recruiting for the Ambassador Crew for the Zhuhai Team boat to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2023-24. Sia was interested. Sailing around the world? Wow! While the berth on board was free along with training. ‘How would I fund the travel to the UK for training, other airfares and living costs on board? And what about my postgraduate course?’
Although she had thousands of questions and concerns, her teammates in the University Sailing Team and the roommates in her dormitory all told her that she should apply.
Sia was very hesitant: she took out a piece of paper and wrote down the reasons for her to go and not to go, but still could not decide what to do.
Several days later, she told herself to take it easy, just apply and then decide. There was no point in worrying now. Anyway, the sea test of handling a large boat was free-which otherwise would cost several hundred Renminbi. Just look on it as a new sailing experience.
So, on the last morning of the deadline, Sia submitted her application.
Passing the initial selection, she went to Jiuzhou Marina where she had sailed before, for the interview and sea test. After two-days of selection, Zhuhai Team chose 13 ambassador crew out of over 30 candidates, who came from different parts of China and even from abroad. Sia was among them. Most were young people and each had his/her own uniqueness and same passion for the sea. She was no longer puzzled but happily took this unexpected opportunity for sailing-training in the UK and taking part in the global race.
Using money saved from her living expenses at university Sia had enough for her airfare to go to England for training. Her parents fund the money for her other expenses, saying it was like paying for her sailing when she was a child and supporting her love of the sea.
It’s only safe in the sea.
In November 2023, Sia flew to Cape Town, South Africa several days in advance of meeting the boat and rented a car at the airport to travel together with Wenwen, her Zhuhai teammate.
But the Google Map guided them away from the highway and into a slum area through a country road. Their car was stopped and the girls were attacked, windows were broken, luggage was stolen from the car. The car keys were taken but later thrown back at them.
The shock of the incident left Sia helpless, unable to think how to start the car, even how to use her hands and feet. After a period of shivering and encouraging each other, the pair finally managed to start the car.
Shocked and distraught they reported the incident to the police and contacted both Chinese Embassy and the Clipper office. They said they only had some small cuts to the skin and some loss of property. Sia was worried that they might have lost their sailing gear (special clothing), so unable to join in the race; so she stayed to do the report with the police and asked Wenwen to check whether their gears was still there: ‘It’s so dangerous here on the land. As long as my gear is there, it’s OK. I can still join the race and leave.’
The following days, Sia and Wenwen only stayed around the waterfront, daring not to go out. They only felt safe when they were with Clipper family members.
In fact, Sia had injured her wrist in the attack but did not tell anyone and worked on the boat as normal, worried that she might not be allowed to join in the race without being fully recovered. The crew were very understanding about the robbery and showed their concern for the girls, which helped. Indeed, thinking the two looked like High School students they were not given heavy work around the boat!
Soon it was November 18th and the start of the race. A voyage of nearly 5000 nautical miles across the Southern Ocean from South Africa to Australia. Although she was leaving the dangerous land, Sia’s wrist was in no way fully recovered.
The familiar atmosphere on the boat and the feeling of teamwork lifted the shadow in Sia’s heart and she started to concentrate on the race together with the team.
With her knowledge of meteorology, she spent a bit more time reading the weather forecast sent by the satellite from the race organizer, to the Skipper and First Mate (or AQP). This information on wind and air pressure would suggest the routes and tactics for the racing boats. Very quickly the Skipper and AQP began to value Sia’s suggestions and encouraged her to offer advice.
Working on deck her team mates would ask Sia to look at the clouds and tell them how long how long the wind would last. Would the wind direction change? Should we prepare change the sails? Below deck they wanted her to teach them to know when the heavy rain would stop, and how to plan their route better.
Sis’a knowledge and teaching became a way to pass time as the boat screamed through the Roaring Forties of the Southern Ocean with its high winds, huge waves and fasting moving clouds.
But Sia was not the only one with professional skills on board.
When the desalinator - a machine to make sea water drinkable - broken down, it caused serious concern among the crew. But one of them was an engineer who, without spare parts in the middle of the ocean, was able to fix it much to everyone’s relief. The engineer just smiled, ‘A piece of cake, no worries.’
Amongst the other crew was a chef whose experience meant the crew ate interesting and nutritious meals, while another was a registered doctor from Italy who was doing the whole circumnavigation. His presence gave the crew confidence in the event of illness or injury. One man had been brought up by the sea and communicated his passion for sailing to everyone.
Day by day, Sia enjoyed the experience more and more. Even in 50 to 60 knot winds in the Roaring Forties she would lie in small bunk, listening to the loud flapping of the sheets (ropes) above her on the deck. If she had a moments concern about danger she would immediately tell herself, ‘Don’t worry. The team is so capable, no worries.’ Then she would fall into a deep sleep.
After 21 days and 19 hours, Zhuhai finished second in the race to Australia, the second time the team made podium position in a single leg. The crew were ecstatic.
Arriving in Fremantle, Sia was actually a bit sad: ‘Is that it?’ She wanted to go further. ‘It’s not as difficult as I thought. How great would it be to race around the whole world.’
Beauties Brought by the Sailing
After finishing the deep cleaning and other work, Sia met with Libby, the British sailing coach who taught her at BSC in Qinhuangdao.
‘Do you still remember the 11-year-old girl learning to sail with you 10 years ago?’ Sia asked Libby, ‘I have just sailed almost 5,000 miles from South Africa to Australia. I can sail across an ocean now.’
Libby gave her a big hug and was proud of her. From sailing as a child, Libby had gone in her Gap Year to work as a dinghy instructor at BSC and to experience China. Both were having a new-life experience, neither could have imagined they would meet again in Australia after over 10 years and the experiences that BSC and sailing had brought them. Libby moved to Australia after her graduation and worked as a sailing instructor here.
Who could imagine how sailing can change lives?
Sia remembered that there was one day in her UK Clipper training that she saw a group of children wearing helmets and life-jackets learning to sail. ‘Look! That was me when I was a kid,’ she told her team mates, ‘I learned to sail like that.’ They cheered loudly to the children. In her heart Sia thanked BSC for bringing an authentic British sailing experience to her childhood in China, which led her to a wider sailing world.
Another time, during training in the UK, she saw boats taking parts in the Classic Sailing Boat Week. They would do a routine parade at sea every year during their event. The team members and Sia stopped to watch them, their wooden hulls and masts and ancient cotton sails. She was amazed that these boats that looked like museum pieces were still out there on the water.
It may seem that all the memories and everything with sailing are beautiful and positive for Sia since her childhood.
But she understands that oceans and sailing are actually dangerous, though proper training means you do it with respect for the sea.
She said that she understood why the instructor made them wear helmets and told them to ‘keep your head down when jibing or tacking’ as this was all about safety. Only by taking care in this way, could you fully enjoy sailing, surfing on the waves like flying in the ocean.
The yacht is no difference with a dinghy. The crew must be constantly aware of safety. Only when everyone is following the rules, could they enjoy sailing safely and happily. This is the best part of the Clipper experience for Sia, to make a group of amateur sailors and even the inexperienced become a team qualified to race across oceans.
Beyond basic skills what is needed is the spirit of adventure. When sailing on the ocean, there could be all sorts of accidents and situations, where you have to quickly find an answer.
Sia remembered that once in the race while working on deck, they found they raised the spinnaker with only one sheet attached to both sides, instead of a sheet each side. This meant they could not trim the sail, which might rip in a stronger wind. Reluctant to take the sail in, given the work involved, Sia suggested they could alter course to reduce pressure on the spinnaker and re-attach the sheet. This was experience she got sailing keel boats at university and that what worked on a 20-foot keel boat might apply to a 70-foot ocean racer.
It did. Everyone thanked Sia. ‘I was thinking that logic might work and it was done by all of us, not just me,’ she said. ‘I was so pleased.’
This is why Sia loves sailing, whether it is about safety, or cooperation, you always get positive feedback either through the speed of the boat or one’s teammates, encouraging you to keep doing the right thing, to find new solutions.
Probably, this respect for rules, teamwork and desire for adventure, are the reasons behind why Sia felt safe only at sea.
The opportunity to meet more people and see a wider world through sailing when you are young - isn’t that an opportunity to be treasured?
Sia went back to university after finishing the race. She now wants to complete her postgraduate study but combine her her professional skills with sailing and explore the balance between the land and the ocean in both her career and life.
