  • A 1960s Sailor Encouraged by His Daughter to Join in the Race
  • Part Twelve, Season Two, Stories of Ordinary People Sailing With Clipper

  • Introduction: After joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2015-16 the writer penned a series of articles for the Chinese magazine, Global Children Sailing about Clipper sailors. With the success of the Qingdao boat winning the Clipper 2019-20 Race in 2022, all the Chinese Clipper crew are excited that there is increasing interest in ocean racing and the people who do it.   This is season two of Stories of Ordinary People Sailing Around the World, in both Chinese and English.
  • Why is the ocean so attractive? What makes ocean sailors different? Could you be one of them, challenging the ocean and yourself?    This series tells you more about sailing and a love of the ocean.

  • We often hear stories of children that were tiger-parented, but rarely parents who were ‘tiger-childrened’. The hero of this feature is Yingcheng MA, Dr. Ma, Markus, now 58, a plastic surgeon and Senior Aviation Doctor and Trainer in Sports & Health Management for pilots at Shandong Airlines. He was encouraged to join in the Clipper 15-16 Race in the Qingdao Ambassador Crew for the North Pacific Ocean leg from China to the USA. He was also one of the young sailorswho rode a surf board to welcome and send off the Qingdao Team boat from the marina in March 2024.
  • Dad, you should cross the ocean by sailing!

  • In April 2013, Guo Chuan, a Qingdao skipper, finished a record-breaking solo non-stop circumnavigation of 137 days. Despite the ordeal Guo jumped into the water and swam to meet his wife and son waiting on the pontoon. Markus was there with his wife and daughter and he wondered why was the ocean so attractive – and how could anyone have such energy after such a voyage?

  • Markus’ family love nature, travel and adventure.   In 2012, they drove to Tibet to celebrate his daughter Esther winning a full scholarship to Singapore Nanyang Technological University. They enjoyed the snowy mountains, the high plateau, the glaciers, holy mountains and waters, thousand year old Cypress trees, the magnificent Tibetan buildings like Petal Palace, the base camp of Mount Everest, and wild animals in the high plateau. They were also touched by the local Tibetan people who walked and knelt down every other step to show their worship of the mountain god. Even suffering from altitude sickness, they were hugely impressed by the beauty of such pure nature.

Photo 2: July 2012, the drive to Tibet and arrival at the foot of Mount Everest
  • In November 2014, Markus’ family travelled with another family to Australia and New Zealand on a 40-day self-drive trip. They went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, watched fish running in the colorful deep ocean, bungee jumped where it all began, flew over Mount Cook by helicopter……The wildness of nature impressed them yet again.

  • Hearing about the recruitment campaign for Clipper 15-16, Markus told friends and family that he was thinking of joining to see a different type of nature in the furthest oceans.

  • His daughter, Esther, was very keen he should join but politely suggested he would need to improve his English to be selected.

  • Markus graduated from the PLA Air Force Medical University and served for 18 years, but still had the instinct of a soldier to act quickly. Even before leaving New Zealand he put in his application and worked with his daughter as to how he could improve his English.

Back in school, Esther invited her schoolmates and friends to come up with an English name for her father. They settled on Markus. Ma was delighted with the name which sounds similar to his family name and means brave and strong and reflected how he had continued to keep fit since leaving the army.

  • In January 2015, Markus successfully passed several rounds of selection with his physical fitness and overall ability at least as good as younger candidates, but his English was still a bit weak. He was to become the oldest member of the Qingdao Ambassador Crew.

  • Training

  • Despite being accepted Markus felt his English was not as good as other members of the crew, so he worked hard during the UK Clipper training and was prepared to ask for help when he did not understand something.

Bob Photo 6: April 2015, Clipper Level 1 training in Portsmouth, UK, with new sailors, female skipper Emily and first mate Bob

  • In the wind and waves, his physical strength maintained over the years through exercise gradually came out.   When younger crew got seasick and needed a rest, he was always energetic. He would help others with their unfinished duties, thinking this or that person always helped me during training. He was popular in the team.   They seemed to forget that as the oldest Ambassador crew member, maybe they should look after him.

Photo 7: May 2015 Isle of White, UK for Clipper Training Level 2 with skipper Quntun and crew

  • All the years after leaving the army, Markus had continued to keep up a serious daily fitness regime like crunch, plank, rope climbing, winter swimming, gym work, cycling, playing billiards, skateboarding and table tennis.   Even when he was on the boat, he liked to use the shroud to do rope climbing.   As an ancient Chinese poem describes a soldier in far-away places, ‘Clever and agile like monkeys and apes, brave like leopards and the dragon.’ he always impressed everyone.   Some foreign teammates even asked him whether he used some technique of Chinese Gongfu to do rope-climbing?

Photo 8: May 2015 Isle of White, UK for Clipper Training Level 3 with Skipper Gareth and Crew

  • Before the final Level 4 training in April 2015 every team was to hang the British flag on the front of the boat to proclaim they were British as they trained off the French coast. While other teams put on full safety gear to climb the forestay, the Qingdao   skipper gave the flag to Markus.

Photo 9: April 25th 2015 Portsmouth, UK Crew Allocation Day for Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2015-16

  • ‘Raise your hand to meet the flying spear and bend down to scatter the horse’s hooves.’ as is the Chinese poem.   With his bare hands, Markus climbed the metal wire.   Hanging the flag, holding on with one hand he climbed down easily.   All the crew on the deck applauded him. Other boat crews saw this and noted that ‘A Qingdao sailor could do Chinese Gongfu.’

Photo 10: May 2015, English Channel for Clipper Training Level 4 with Skipper Igor and Crew

  • But the excitement was short-lived.   The Clipper office staff were summoned by the marina management: We heard that your crew member broke the safety rules of the marina.   What is this? There was no real excuse.   Igor, the Qingdao skipper promised that he would not allow anyone in the team to take such a risk in future.   Markus felt guilty in causing problems for his skipper, but was upset he could not do it again, as he had been practicing rope climbing for many years. The ropes he climbed on land were more difficult than this and he never used any safety equipment. How could such easy climbing be dangerous in the marina? It seems there still were cultural differences to be understood.

  • Markus went back to Qingdao after the training and worked hard to improve his English. He also sought guidance from his daughter who was by now doing her postgraduate study at Carnegie Mellon University, in the USA.

  • Crossing the North Pacific Ocean with a Picture Painted by His Daughter When a Child

  • When he began his Clipper journey across the Pacific in March 2016, Markus took on board a picture by his daughter when she was nine years-old. Painted in 2001, it was a celebration of China winning of right to hold the 2008 Olympics, when Qingdao was the venue for the sailing competitions.

Photo 13: March 20 2016, start of the Clipper 2015-16 race across the North Pacific Ocean, Leg 6, with a picture painted by his daughter when aged nine

  • It is extremely cold in the North Pacific Ocean in March and April with uncertain wind and waves. When the storms come, you wonder whether the boat is strong enough to survive.

  • Soon after leaving China, Markus was on mother watch- doing the house-keeping chores – in a period of very rough weather. The Pacific Ocean is not always the tranquil sea the name implies. Many of the crew were unwell and Markus was one of the few still able to work, so he made cups of tea and gave emotional support.

Photo 14: March 20th 2016 Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, the start of the journey to cross the North Pacific Ocean

  • The food that had been prepared was uneaten so he threw it overboard and set about clearing the sink of dirty dishes. Despite the rolling and pitching of the boat he managed to stow the crockery safely – usually a two-person job – without any breakages.

  • After checking on the health of his fellow crew members he cleaned the toilet, checked the water tank and wrote the log. By now he was himself feeling unwell and needed to lie down.

  • Peeling off his heavy-duty sailing gear, life jacket and boots he climbed onto the small second level bunk and into his sleeping bag. The cold, wet bag and the small space meant he fell asleep quickly, to do it all again in four hours.   For now sleeping was the priority.

  • That was his first and only such episode of seasickness during the race. Being   seasick is a combination of tiredness and too much work,he says, advice he offered others in the crew.

Photo 15: April 1st 2016 the storm in the Pacific

  • In the days following, each watch team could manage to have just three people to work the boat.   When on deck there was one to helm, one to trim sails and one to write the sail log and make sure the helmsman did not fall asleep through tiredness. Each hour of the four-hour watch they would change roles. Even with wearing two pairs of thick gloves against the cold, the helmsman's fingers became totally numb in an hour. Steering the boat in such conditions-feeling cold, lonely and hungry-demanded real effort.

  • When they finished the deck work on this evening and got back to the cabin, Caroline - a circumnavigator who was on Mother watch - had baked a cake. The deck crew drank hot chocolate to warm themselves holding the cup in both hands, in what one person described as "the sweetest time in the world". Later they put their wet gloves on top of the generator to dry, before the next watch.

  • Markus remembered the night of April 1st when the wind speed hit speeds of 50 to 60 knots (between 90 and 110 Km). Skipper Bob Beggs asked the team to reef the sails (reduce the sail area), but no one could hear him clearly. He was in the cockpit close to one winch, holding on as tightly as possible without getting his hands caught, for fear of losing his fingers. Everyone on the deck was tied on and dared not move.

  • The end of the boom was trailing in the water with the boat keeling over at 45 degrees. It felt like the wind was tearing the boat apart. It took two crew to hold the wheel to keep the boat on course. The crew were scared, struggling for four hours together, like time was frozen.

  • As the wind and waves abated, the crew took to reefing the sails while appreciating the strength of mother nature. They understood the ocean forces at work and that the race was as much a competition against the elements as a race against the other boats - and the role of the skipper was to make good decisions.

  • As the crisis passed the regular pattern of life on board resumed. Markus took out the picture painted by his daughter, taking it on deck and to different parts of the boat, sharing his feeling of crossing the ocean, feeling his daughter cheering him on, encouraging him to finish the journey with her.

  • But as one challenge passed, there was another.

  • The desalinator, a machine to make fresh water from sea water, was broken and efforts to fix it had failed. A check on the fresh water tank showed only 300L-demanding rationing for the 18 people on board, with two more weeks sailing. So the skipper announced that each person could have only one liter of fresh water for drinking, washing and cooking, and that dish washing could use only sea water. Although not an easy decision to accept the crew knew it was their only option, but still they felt depressed.

  • Markus didn’t drink his share and tried not to use up all his quota to help others. The crew joked that he was a camel and now that they were in the desert, they should try to be like him. Joking relaxed the atmosphere on board.

  • Before things got really bad however the desalinator was fixed a week later by the skipper and an engineer member of the crew. Crisis averted.

  • Soon they were able to enjoy watching the dolphins jumping and swimming alongside the boat, the albatross and storm petrels flying above the ocean waves. Compared with their own issues over fresh water, the crew marveled at the way the birds and mammals lived their lives owning their environment. Around this time Qingdao crossed the International Date Line and the crew celebrated that they had just gained another day!

  • But good things did not last.   During one night the Code 2 spinnaker (a large sail used when running in front of the wind) got caught up, twisted in the shrouds (lines that hold the mast). Even after a crew member had scaled the mast to save the sail, it had to be abandoned.

  • This twisted and bulb-like sail was there on the shroud making loud flapping noises and kept spinning around noisily. It seemed like both a protest and an alarm.

  • After a week, when everyone was getting used to the sound of the flapping sail, the top back shroud broke.   Luckily there was no one on the front deck and no one was hurt.   It was metal fatigue caused by the continuous wearing from the spinnaker against the shroud.   Everyone looked at the power of the wind and waves and the damaged to the boat.   Already exhausted, the crew became anxious about these and the other challenges of the vast ocean.

Photo 16: April 2-16 2016 the difficulties and challenges when crossing the North Pacific Ocean

  • Finally, they could see snowy mountains in the distance and the tails and water spouts of whales nearby.   The whole team was cheering: ‘Land! Land!’ The relaxed and happy mood quickly spread over the boat. They hugged each other and some burst into tears.

  • As they entered US waters the skipper said to raise up the American flag on the side shroud: the longest leg of Clipper across the North Pacific Ocean was over!

  • On April 18th, after a 29-day crossing from Qingdao, the Clipper teams arrived in Seattle. Ma’s wife was there to welcome him and his daughter called to congratulate him: Dad is the most handsome guy in our family from now on!

Photo 18: April 20th 2016 Seattle Aquarium   The Award Giving Ceremony and parade
  • His daughter’s friends and schoolmates who joined in the campaign to choose a suitable English name for him were not hiding their praises: Markus, Uncle Ma is so brilliant! He is much better than us young people!

  • Despite the troubles and challenges of the ocean crossing, Markus says he learned much from his voyage across the Pacific, setting nature in the raw. Just like the poem ‘Once you crossed the ocean, you would know there is huge world.’

  • Markus & His Daughter After the Race

  • Markus went back to work after the race, continuing training pilots in health management and emergency aviation medicine.

  • Those who work as pilots must have something special about them. They have seen a wider world than others and are often proud and arrogant, and not easy to manage.   Markus mainly trains them to keep improving their fitness level and weight management, using aerobic and anaerobic exercises so that they live well to reduce their health risk especially for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

  • These much younger students looked to Markus to demonstrate the training exercises, which they could not manage as well as he does.   They gave him more respect.

  • Markus shared his own Clipper experience with the pilots describing the beauty of the ocean and the hope that Clipper members would still be fit enough to take part when they were over 60 or 70. This encouraged the students to train and share experiences with Markus, both in and out of class.

  • Alongside the pilots, Markus was also invited by the Qingdao Sailing Association to work as a trainer for the ‘Sailing for Schools’ program. This has been a special sailing campaign in Qingdao since 2006. Much welcomed by schools, children and their parents, it aims to encourage a love of the ocean and for more children to go sailing. Qingdao Ambassador Crew like Mingyue Liu of Clipper 15-16, Frankie Zheng of 17-18 and 19-20, Ziqi Wang of 23-24 all started sailing through this program.

  • From his Clipper experience, Markus feels strongly that sailing is a sport that enables one to fully merge with nature, to take its challenges and work closely in a team in the very changeable ocean. Every time you go to sea, you have an adventure, which creates new ways of dealing with physical and mental problems, especially for young people,he says. The earlier children start sailing, the more they benefit. For the last eight years Markus has been keen to share his sailing experience and teaches in a relaxed and happy way.

  • Markus took up sailboarding in Qingdao in 2017 and trains everyday, whether it is snowing or windy and he has become very proficient. Back in the Tang Dynasty, the famous poet Li Bai described in his poem, Swordsman’s Legend, that his silver saddle brightens his white horse and he is as quick and charming as a shooting star. Now that Markus could freely surf through the wind and waves, he feels himself like an historic swordsman. Every morning, his sporty image is on the sailboard as the sun rises over the sea, making him a favorite subject for local photographers.

  • His daughter, while she was studying in Carnegie Mellon University, travelled to South America for the World Cup, explored the Amazon tropical rainforest, and went to Africa to enjoy the animal migration……The whole family would always share their adventures.

  • If parents do love their kids, they will make long-term plans for them. But actually just as in the Chinese saying, the love from children to parents is exactly the same.

  • So, Markus, on the one hand, explored the world together with his daughter in Qingdao, on the other hand, he is still studying English by himself. He watches English language videos, reads books in English and tries to speak more English in his class. He also encourages young people to keep learning and practicing English so that they will learn more and communicate better, no matter whether for their work, or travel or to go sailing.

  • In 2026, when the Clipper race teams arrive in Qingdao, Markus will welcome the   boat into the marina by surfing on his sailboard. That will be the 30th year of the Clipper race, the 20th year for its co-operation with Qingdao, and Markus will be a young 60-year-old.
