Prelude:After joining in Leg 3 from Cape Town, South Africa to Albany, Australia, Clipper Round the World 2015-16, the writer wrote series of column articles for a Chinese magazine,Global Children Sailingto introduce stories about Clipper sailors. This year, with the awarding of Clipper 2019-20 Race Winner by Qingdao team, all the Chinese Clipper crew are proud that more people are getting increasingly curious about the sport and the crew. Thus, Season Two ofStories of OrdinaryPeople Sailing Around the Worldis launching with both Chinese and English to help more people understand the stories behind. Why the ocean is so attractive? What is the difference between you and them? Will you be one of them to challenge yourself and embrace the ocean as well? You are welcome to get to know them, to know sailing and to love the ocean.
The sailor of this session is a father figure sailor with deep love to his children and wife. His name is Guofeng YANG.A man with a chivalrous spirit and tender heart who self-funded for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2017-18, Sanya Team, is the hero of our story.
Recalling back the race years ago, Guofeng had to remember Leg 8 of 2017-18.There were two races in Leg 8, first from New York to Ireland and then to Liverpool. They sailed quite peacefully to cross the Atlantic without having any heavy storms in the first race and approached the finishing line in the midnight with around 2 hours to Ireland. After finishing this race, everyone relaxed and sailed slowly to Ireland.
Minghao, the media circumnavigation crew of Sanya team, started to interview everyone the wishes backing to land.He specially asked Guofeng whom he would like to meet.Guofeng said without any hesitation, ‘Of course my wife!’ but then added, ‘But she had just delivered, and so she may not come.’
When Sanya team finally made the way into the port, race organizers, families and friends of the crew welcomed them with their hands waving in the air, calling with high voice, Sanya, Sanya or the names of their loved ones. ‘Guofeng!’
听到熟悉的声音,看着明浩在旁边的笑脸,他突然反应过来他掉入了好朋友设好的陷阱。
Upon hearing such a familiar voice, he realized he had fallen into a trap set by his good friend, Minghao, who was smiling devilishly beside him.
It turned out that his wife has checked with Minghao in advance about his whereabout, planning to give him a surprise.Even though they were one day later than originally palnned, Guofeng was extremely happy to see his wife waiting for him.He felt so close with the families of other crew members welcoming them back. All the sufferings crossing the Atlantic in those over 20 days were gone with the wind.
All the teams stopped over in Ireland for deep cleaning and maintenance of the boat. His wife accompanied him for a few days and then back to Hong Kong in advance.Guofeng and the other crew did so well in the following race from Ireland to Liverpool that they beat their biggest competitor, Team Seattle. This made them became the Race Champion of Clipper 17-18 with the highest overall score, the first ever champion in Clipper history named after a Chinese city.
This time, everyone was cheering for the race champion of team Sanya while Guofeng heard the familiar calling again and saw the waving hands of his wife.If the interview by Minghao last time made him wonder the secret behind, this time it was a real surprise as his wife made the second fly to UK to welcome him back, leaving her work and little baby behind in such a short time.
Those who were welcoming their families included Mike’s wife and Jan’s fiancé, the two team circumnavigators. They were among the welcoming and sending-off team in every stopover harbor.Their loved ones finished their circumnavigation by sailing around the world, while they finished twice by flying around the world. In the celebration banquet of Team Sanya, the crew decided to give them the award of The Best Supporter.Probably, this is the secret behind the Race Champion for Team Sanya.
The story of mum welcoming dad back in the harbor twice, flying from Hong Kong to UK in a short time and the story of the families of the crew, were the most tender memories of the race for Guofeng, and the ones most talked about to his children about sailing. He said the power of the sea and the challenges in the ocean race were the memories to himself, but the love between families and friends is the best for story telling to children.
The origin of Guofeng’s sailing career began with his wife. One day in 2016, the couple invited Jeff, a friend of his wife, for dinner in Hong Kong where he was working at that time.Jeff was an ambassador crew for Team Qingdao, Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2007-08.He talked about the interesting stories about the race during the meal.Guofeng was attracted and asked for more information. The pioneer sailor gave him the Clipper website and told him to search by himself. His wife did not expect that she would plant a seed for her husband about Clipper race after this meal.
Guofeng checked the website and was fascinated again by the live reports, videos and crew diaries of Clipper 15-16 race.Finding the simple application procedure, he immediately paid the application fee, around 10 pounds. ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gain” was his philosophy for after all, he will regret it in the future if he didn’t apply now.
The distance interview with the race organization committee was unexpectedly easy.It was not focused on the sailing experience and skills, but rather, on communication, team work and ability to work under pressure.Such personality was regarded the most essentials for sailing and living on the boat for over two weekswith people from different country and personality. Guofeng easily stood out with his experience studying overseas and working in the international environment in Hong Kong for a long time.He chose to join in Leg 4 and Leg 8.
After the admission, Guofeng immediately joined in the dingy sailing training with the Hong Kong Yacht Association and studied hard for two weeks. Then he joined in the compulsory 4 levels of training by Clipper race team.In order to have sufficient time to be with families in Hong Kong and to experience different ocean conditions, he chose to join in the Level 1, 3 & 4 trainings in the UK and the Level 2 training in Sydney.
Guofeng thought Clipper training is a real fast track training for ocean sailing, which enabled a naive sailor to gradually become a cross ocean sailor to live together with people from different culture background and same target in a close and small space.Boat safety, teamwork, life on a boat, sailing skills, handle difficulties, and everything about sailing was covered in the training. After several rounds of trainings, the ability to cope with extreme and difficult situations was greatly improved. Those who passed the training would become qualified crew to sail across the ocean, no matter how well is his or her sailing experience and skills.
关于远洋比赛和“见风使舵” About the Ocean Race & ‘Taking Advantage of the Wind’
Guofeng fell in deep love with sailing after the training. He said that people developed deep respect to mother nature after they sail across the ocean. The ancient Chinese saying, harmony between nature and humankind, has real wisdom. One can only realize how small one boat or one person is after witnessing the power and the vast of the sea.People on the same boat could only back to the land for their destination following the instruction from the skipper and working for one common goal with both independence and interdependence.
Taking advantage of the wind, which is normally regarded as a negative behavior on land, is absolutely right on the sea.You can only follow the nature, make use of it, obey it and not fight against it, you can sail easily.Having courage does not mean to rash, having wisdom to work with nature is real cleverness.
这是陆地运动不能带来的,也是帆船深深吸引人的地方。
This cannot be taken from the land sports and this is what the beauty of sailing.
Guofeng said sailing is an every inclusive sport. It can be casual, one can still enjoy when gets old; it could be a lifestyle, one can enjoy with families and friends; it could be sports to enjoy its competitiveness and even its extreme.Difficult ocean races like Clipper, you cannot have shower for over 20 days, you cannot eat well nor sleep soundly. But after such experience, you can handle almost everything calmly.
After the Clipper Race克利伯赛后 After the Clipper Race
After the Clipper race, Guofeng returned to Hong Kong and then moved to Shenzhen. The weekend family activities become taking the children to sail.He is not expecting his children to love sailing as them, but thinks the children would get familiar with sailing by helping with the ropes, and wheels on the boat, which is enough for them by now.If they start to love sailing and enjoy this sport, that could benefit them.
Guofeng found that many non-Chinese sailors had sailing experience since very young during his training and races with Clipper. He got to know an Australian sailor around 20-year-old in his Leg 4 race in Australia. The young sailor said his first memory in life is watching the sail onthe mast intheir boat.
At the time when Zhenghe was sailing across the Atlantic ocean, we were rich in sailing culture. But it was cut down with the ban on the marine trade and voyage in the Qing Dynasty. Now more and more people get to know sailing, but it might take several generations to re-develop the ocean culture.
Guofeng always thought about Zhenghe and the bridges his fleet had built between the east and the west. Communication could help with understanding and developing between different cultures. Even though we are now enjoying the convenience of land transportation, we should still always remember that the ocean covers 70% of our earth. It would be such a pity that the legend of Zhenghe stays only a far-away legend.
He said maybe the Clipper sailors like us would be the first generation of sailing in the modern world, influencing our second and third generations to come to love ocean and become infatuated with sailing. Our sailing heritage would be restored gradually through them.
Year after year, when the sailors got back to land telling stories to their families and children, it could not only about the beautiful sunrise, whales jumping, dolphins following and the astonishing stars, but also about the surprise meeting families when back at the harbor.Such hugs, kisses, such missing, such love, would get across different parts of the ocean, country and time, last forever.
你呢,未来你会想给孩子们讲一个怎样的帆船故事?
How about you, what type of sailing story you would like to tell your children?
